A short-form proof of concept puzzle-platformer, built in Unreal Engine 4

Design Goals:

The aim of this project was to create a short prototype of a game that would appeal to casual gamers who enjoy light puzzle-solving and simple traversal mechanics within a cartoonish fantasy setting.

  • To design and prototype key gameplay systems, including a dice-themed puzzle mechanic.
  • To promote exploration through compelling level blockouts.
  • Implement working Combat AI using behaviour trees.
  • Create a short but meaningful demo under a tight deadline.

Outcomes:

    The prototype had a playable, start-to-finish level, with a robust character controller that allowed for satisfying platforming and exploration elements.
    Enemy combat AI had been set up to attack the player and die when damaged.
    We entered the project into the 'Game Maker's Toolkit' game jam for that year, where it gained very positive feedback from the GMTK and itch.io community.
